Release Date(s): (JP) April 03, 2008 (US) September 23, 2008 (EU) September 19, 2008 Player(s): 1 or 2 Player(s) Platform(s): PS2 / Xbox 360 / PSP Before we begin, I would like to state that it would be appropriate for you to know what the series is about and what it is by reading the Warriors Orochi review. Thanks. Core: Warriors Orochi 2 is the sequel to the elder title, Warriors Orochi. The game is based on solely the revival of the Serpent King. You would be right to expect the return of the original cast (plus the 2XL cast) as well as a number of new characters - Sun Wukong, Kiyomori Taira, Himiko and of course Orochi X which is Orochi's revived form. They are the villains. The so-called heroes who attempt to stop the resurrection are - Fu Xi and Nu Wa who return at longlast in physical form from Dynasty Warriors 3. As well as the new exclusive additions of Yoshitsune Minamoto and Taigong Wang. If you've played the original title you'll know that the videogame is based around Orochi using a time warp and bringing all the mightiest warriors in Ancient China and Feudal Japan into one big scene. Now so after Orochi was slayed, a revival plotted by Da Ji and Kiyomori Taira (a new character just revived by Da Ji) was to take place in a ceremony to bring back the demon from eternal slumber. Once again though, Orochi is not seen until the later stages in his slightly new form. However, as a exclusive in this product you are able to actually go back in time and see how Orochi caused the mayhem by actually playing through his story leading to the events. So of course if you played the first you will find this a real treat and promotional highlight. Features: Enough of the story lets move onto the features returning or the new key features at hand. Starting at first the three-way character switching returns, but this time you are able to use this more to your advantage by performing a three-way triple musou attack when at dire health or when you have a special item equipped when unlocked. Not only this but there are a host of items that can improve your fighting skills, or just for those diehard fans. Since these items are a way away from the story plot finale and are actually not needed unless you wish to complete everything. But to get them in your possession you will have to look at the clues in the Gallery or in the Treasure menu during the battles. Also, you are able to acquire a 3rd costume for every last playable figure, this time, by getting at least 10 Proficiency. If you are playing as the Dynasty Warriors characters you will get the oufits from Dynasty Warriors 4 (those DW5 characters are exceptions.) And if you are playing as the Samurai Warriors 2 crew, you will get either their Samurai Warriors 1 outfits or some redesigned. Redesigns will be selectable for the exclusive figures in Warriors Orochi 2 as well. Treasures are new items which somewhat replace the Personal Items from the 1st title. These will be found by accomplishing certain tasks, often timed, throughout the Story or Free Mode. When gotten, you will be able to sacrifice a weapon with particular attributes in order to create them. Then, with a 3 slot special weapon being the maximum, you can give this reward to a character. Each will of course have advantages to fit your playing style. Modes: Story Mode is open to your play, they are; Shu, Wei, Wu, Samurai and Orochi's own which I've talked about above. Each differs from each other and hosts seperate characters, but like before, interwine with one another. So you'll have plenty of fun unlocking them favorites of yours. And thankfully there are no nuisances here in able to unlock them, its very straight forward since you only need to finish the stages or stories to get them available for your use and pleasure. Unless his name is Orochi X that's, whom has been described as a real chore to get. You will have to sucessfully win the whole of the Dream Mode which I will explain what it's in a moment. Free Mode is again here for you. Once again feels like its far from special, as you will only find special death quotes here that are worthy playing for. In my opinion this needs to be really brought back to life. Dream Mode is a new exclusive area of Warriors Orochi 2. This is a mode that has little to do with the Story Mode and puts your favorite heroes together in a fray to complete off-story missions. Some hilarious and serious conversations can be found here as a distraction after completing the main part of the game which is the story. As well as of course really cool cutscenes just for the fanservice that was perhaps missing and wanted in the original multiplatformed videogame. However, you might not find what you are looking for, there's only one unique scene in each and only a handful have these cutscenes to feast your eyes on. Unlocking these stages can be achieved by completing tasks scattered around the games features and modes. Such as getting your Proficiency level very high or eventually unlocking the three characters to open the level after the missions a win. Not forgetting to winning this whole course of events will grab you the goal to play as the titles main nemesis, Orochi X. This is a real deed to accomplish and so I would advise for you to look at the Dream Mode stage requirements found elsewhere within the site and forums. VS Mode, here you are able to put your abilities to a test against your friends in a series of modes, such as horse racing. This is a welcome return to an almost forgotten mode thats recently been neglected for a bit too long if I must say. Challenge, in here its basically a duel ring where you go against your friends/family or AI in a 1vs1 caged ring. You either can deplete your opponents health quickly enough before they switch to another character or you can find your way around the ring and knock them out by smacking them out. As the battles turn the heat on, things start to get challenging, so you may find that using a characters strong points to be the best case scenario. And remember just because they have strong abilities in the normal modes like Story/Free Mode then this doesn't mean its going to apply here. Gallery, a place where you can select to have a background of any character featured within the game can be found here. Previous incarnations will be shown here as images, so that can be your dose of nostalgia right there. So luckily you won't be needing that time machine just yet! There are 6 available for each as well as special wallpapers made just to promote Warriors Orochi 2. Sound: The sound menu can be found in Options. Here you will find and unlock new music, some from new levels, and many old gathered from previous Samurai and Dynasty Warriors products. Once again though, it just feels incomplete not having them all like in the current Empires titles. Throughout the Dream Mode you will see that the likes of classics from Dynasty Warriors 3 are mainly played at certain times. Perhaps a bit too much these certain tracks are being overused though. More diversity would've helped. So thinking of this, I'd like to state that in my opinion the music in most modes are swapped too often, as some cases you'll be getting about 3 tunes in one map. It can be especially bothersome at times when your most favorite track has stopped playing for some music you feel is inferior. About the English voice acting always being a big issue, the new characters sound superb. But with changes always happening throughout Koei's games, it could always be the case of them changing once too often. Graphics: The same as Warriors Orochi 1. I have the PS2 version. However there are many more movies and in-game cutscenes this time which is always good for the eye candy. Difficulty: So so much easier this time around. The damage done to you will be minimal compared to what happens in Warriors Orochi 1. Chaos mode (the hardest) will be breezed by the majority of gamers once you have a persons 4th weapon equipped. Not forgetting that the items when got will make it even more so simpler. Replay Value: Heaps of stuff to do. Train all characters to 99 and get 50 Proficiency, clear all stages in all difficulties to get the CLEAR symbols, mix and match especially for dialogue, get all treasures and play with the infamous Almighty item. And finally of course unlock Orochi X, the most tedious of tasks. There's more replayability here than compared to the origin of the series. Rent or Buy? Well, try renting if you haven't played the first. You might be baffled at whats happening or who's who and why. Depending if you have played either the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series, though. And so if you wanted more from the first, this is without a doubt a buy for you. You will get what you want, in particular you diehard fans.
